When women lead, we all succeed

Celebrating and empowering women – now and beyond today

When women lead, we all succeed

Toronto, ON – Throughout March and April, Segal played a meaningful and integral role in a variety of women‑focused initiatives, programs and events. From celebrating the remarkable contributions women have made to providing the resources to empower women as leaders, here’s a recap of our firm’s most recent activities.

In March, we marked Women’s History Month – which includes International Women's Day on March 8 – with a special female Partner panel discussion on the challenges and opportunities related to women in leadership. It was no surprise this event was a huge success, as firm Partners Candy Hsieh, Natalia Glavina, Rishma Jessa and Dora Mariani candidly shared their insightful and deeply inspiring stories about their personal career journeys. Moderated by Judy Cheng, one of our firm’s Principals, this discussion was both educational and entertaining, providing valuable life lessons and practical career advice to motivate and empower the next generation of women leaders within our firm.

As this year’s International Women’s Day theme was “Inspire Inclusion,” one of the core elements of the occasion was the continued need for investing in women. Being part of the Moore North America network, our firm had an opportunity to do exactly that through the Moore Leadhership1® program. This highly regarded training program is aimed at guiding and supporting female professionals as they strive to advance beyond entry‑level management positions – a particularly challenging stage for women due to gender barriers and inequality. A group of six women from our firm completed the Leadhership1® program’s curriculum, helping them advance their careers and rise to management and senior positions. Looking ahead, we’re delighted to announce another group of women from our firm will be participating in the next session of the program in June.

More recently, on April 9, several female team members from our firm attended the Top 25 Women of Influence® Awards, a celebration of women making a positive impact and driving change. The event served to honour the unique achievements and contributions of women across a diverse range of business sectors and career stages. The opportunity to see so many incredible individuals recognized for the different and unique ways in which they have led meaningful progress in business or society was truly inspiring. As a firm, we look forward to participating in many more of these award events.

While these are a few notable highlights reflecting our commitment to gender parity, our firm continues to seek out new and effective ways to build a more inclusive and equitable professional environment. Great strides have been made, but there is always room for improvement as we strive to foster a world in which every individual is judged on their abilities and merits, without prejudice or bias.

Celebrating eight years of charitable collaboration

23462.00_W_SL_Crossroads_International_blog_MO_V04B

Toronto, ON – Since 2016, Segal GCSE has supported Crossroads International, a leading Canadian volunteer cooperation agency advancing equality for women and girls and eradicating poverty in some of Africa’s poorest countries. Crossroads works to create a more equitable and sustainable world by engaging and empowering individuals, organizations and communities through mutual learning, solidarity and collective action.

Always active in supporting and sponsoring charitable initiatives, Segal GCSE prioritizes giving back to the communities it serves. The firm’s long‑term relationship with Crossroads – playing a role in the Day of the Girl breakfast event and Girls’ Empowerment Programs in sub‑Saharan Africa – has kept this organization’s mission an ongoing presence at Segal CGSE, which inspires and motivates this team’s own commitment to elevating women and female leaders.

“I believe that Segal GCSE has remained loyal to our cause because it closely aligns with some of their key values: empowerment, women’s leadership and the importance of diversity and inclusion in running a business,” says Crossroads Executive Director Heather Shapter. “We also hope that the International Day of the Girl breakfast has provided positive visibility for Segal GCSE, demonstrating a commitment to these values to its employees and the world at large.”

The Day of the Girl breakfast event is designed to raise awareness of the unique challenges girls face – with particular attention given to the circumstances that young girls are confronted by every day in sub‑Saharan Africa where Crossroads operates. For the team at Segal GCSE, helping advocate for the rights of these girls and seeing first‑hand evidence of the empowering impact this work has on their lives has cemented their commitment to corporate responsibility.

“Partnering with Crossroads is a great way to distinguish a firm from its competitors,” explains Shapter. “This shows clients they are about much more than the products or services they offer, and they genuinely care for the world their clients and employees live in. As one of our Girls’ Empowerment participants often says, ‘Why fit in when you can stand out!?’”

Segal GCSE’s first annual day of charity

Toronto, ON – On Sept. 20, team members at Segal GCSE dedicated their workday to give back to the communities we serve, contributing to several local charities and non‑profit organizations, including Durham Outlook, GlobalMedic, Hullmar Park Tree Planting, Parkview Neighbourhood Garden, Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation and Regeneration Brampton. As part of our commitment to giving back, our professionals described this as an amazing, rewarding and humbling experience.

GIVING Beyond Today was a rare opportunity for members of our team who don’t normally cross paths to build new relationships while volunteering together. Whether packaging rice or planting trees, those involved were unanimous in their enthusiasm, with many pledging to sign up for similar activities on a monthly basis in their spare time.

How it began

Segal GCSE has always been active in supporting and sponsoring charitable initiatives, but traditionally taken more of a behind‑the‑scenes role. It’s now time for us to be more open about these objectives, making our priorities clear to those building our firm’s future. After initial discussions between HR and the marketing team, the partner group got involved, eventually accepting a bold proposal for a paid day for staff to dedicate their time and effort to volunteer work. Everyone was in agreement about the merit of this idea and its potential to reignite the firm’s mission and values, while showing support for members of our team who are committed to volunteer initiatives.

Selecting organizations

While Segal GCSE is based in Toronto, we wanted to support organizations throughout the region where our team is based, from Cambridge to Peterborough to downtown Toronto and all the way to Barrie. It was important for our professionals to feel they were supporting not only the communities where they work, but also where they live. In the end, six primary organizations – in Oshawa, Oakville, Brampton and Toronto – were selected. The goal was to allow staff to support whatever cause is dear to them, giving back to the community in a way that is personally fulfilling. In the end, the charities and non‑profits we worked with were immensely grateful and made it clear our commitment had a meaningful impact.

Next time

We are committed to repeating this initiative next year. This paid day of volunteer work is now considered one of the firm’s signature benefits, an incentive our partner group provides to support our team’s wishes. For next year’s edition, we plan to set our sights even higher – ideally, we would like to plan the event so all 200+ team members participate – and we may focus on a single charity or non-profit to simplify the logistical challenges and allow us to make an even more significant impact. In the process of selecting future initiatives, we will continue encouraging staff to suggest organizations that are dear to them. Going forward, GIVING Beyond Today is one more reliable way we can help those who need our support, while bringing the members of our firm closer  together.

Committed to a better tomorrow

Segal GCSE celebrates a Canadian champion

Segal GCSE recently had the pleasure of attending the 2023 RBC Canadian Open in Toronto from June 8‑11 as a Champions Club sponsor. The event turned out to be more than just a memorable team‑building experience. This year’s tournament took on an extra layer of significance as Nick Taylor emerged victorious – the first Canadian champion since 1954.

Surrounded by like‑minded golf enthusiasts, several Segal GCSE partners and their guests were among the attendees who witnessed Taylor’s victory first‑hand – in addition to the extraordinary talent displayed by all the golfers in the competition. The lively atmosphere, exceptional hospitality and world‑class golf action was an ideal setting for building connections and sharing in the collective excitement of witnessing golf history in the making.

Swing for success

 CIBPA International Women’s Day

Segal GCSE was proud to celebrate this past International Women’s Day 2023 by serving as a table sponsor at the Canadian Italian Business and Professional Association (CIBPA) of Toronto’s IWD event.

The event took place at the Montecassino Hotel & Event Venue in Woodbridge on International Women’s Day, March 8, 2023, from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. The focus of the event was to honour women in leadership and also featured CIBPA Toronto’s Women in Excellence awards.

This was the 8th annual IWD event hosted by the organization. This year, Nicole Servinis, from Citytv’s Breakfast Television was the event MC. Andrea Trentadue, from CHIN TV, served as moderator for the evening’s panel.

On a global scale, the IWD 2023 theme was #EmbraceEquity – not just equality. Providing equal opportunities to women is not enough, because “true inclusion and belonging require equitable action,” explained IWD.

With that in mind, it was a true pleasure for our team to celebrate the amazing, innovative female leaders across Canada and the world!
